On Friday night, the body of a 31‑year‑old American Airlines flight attendant was found washed ashore on Hollywood Beach, Florida, after a fatal boating incident that has spurred a joint investigation. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) received a report from two fishermen who spotted the body in the surf near the northern end of Hollywood Beach, close to Dr. Von D Mizell‑Eula Johnson State Park. The FWC said the victim’s injuries were consistent with a vessel strike, and officials identified the remains as Kellie Melinda Williams.

Dr. Von D Mizell‑Eula Johnson State Park is a popular spot for snorkeling and other water activities, featuring a boat ramp that can launch trailered boats up to 36 feet. According to a Hollywood Police report shared with Nexstar, Williams was believed to have been snorkeling that day when the incident occurred.

American Airlines released a statement expressing deep sadness over the loss and pledged to support Williams’ family, loved ones and colleagues. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) posted a message on its Miami branch’s Instagram account announcing the death and offering to collect cards for the family at Miami International Airport. APFA also said it would provide support services to anyone who may need them.

Both the FWC and Hollywood Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. The FWC can be reached at 888‑404‑FWCC (3922). Hollywood Police can be contacted at 954‑764‑4357 (HELP), 954‑967‑4567, or by email at hollywoodpdtips@hollywoodfl.org. A joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding Williams’ death is ongoing.

Florida has seen a rise in boating accidents in recent years. The FWC’s 2025 report recorded 694 boating accidents and 51 fatalities statewide. The state’s beaches, including Hollywood Beach, attract large numbers of boaters and swimmers, and the FWC has repeatedly urged caution in surf zones. The park’s boat ramp and adjacent parking lot accommodate up to 90 vehicles and trailer rigs, making it a common launch point for recreational vessels. Flight attendants are a critical component of airline operations, responsible for passenger safety and comfort. American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, is the largest airline in the world by passengers carried. The APFA, founded in 1977, represents more than 28,000 flight attendants across the United States. At this time, no cause for the incident has been determined beyond the evidence of a vessel strike. The investigation will determine whether any regulatory or safety violations contributed to the tragedy. The FWC and Hollywood Police have not released additional details, and authorities have requested that witnesses remain silent until the investigation is complete. The incident underscores the ongoing risk of boating accidents along Florida’s coastlines, and families of victims and the broader community await further findings from the joint investigation.
