Vacaville, CA – A coalition of local veterans’ groups has begun a citywide effort to replace worn, faded and tattered American flags at private homes in preparation for the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence.

The “Honoring America 250” Community Flag Replacement Initiative was announced by the Vacaville Veterans Service Organizations (VVSOs) on September 6, 2026. Volunteers will survey neighborhoods, identify residences whose flags need replacement, and deliver new, high‑quality United States flags at no cost to homeowners. In addition to distributing flags, the program will provide residents with guidance on proper flag etiquette, including display, care and respectful retirement of worn flags.

Jeff Silva, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7244, said in a statement that the effort “is about more than replacing flags – it’s about honoring what the flag represents.” He added that, as veterans who have served under the flag, the volunteers are proud to continue serving their community by ensuring the symbol is displayed properly and respectfully.

The volunteers come from a range of veteran and auxiliary groups that operate in the Vacaville area. These include American Legion Post 165, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 165, AMVETS Post 1776, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 84, Marine Corps League Detachment 1486, VFW Post 7244, and VFW Auxiliary Unit 7244. Rory Nichols, vice chairman of the VVSOs and a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 1486, said the initiative is “truly a community effort” and that “from our donors to our volunteers to the residents who will proudly fly these flags, everyone plays a role in honoring our nation’s 250th anniversary.”

The program has been made possible through the generous support of local businesses, community organizations and individual donors who have contributed funding, materials and volunteer time. While the exact amount of financial support has not been disclosed, the VVSOs noted that the combined contributions have covered the cost of new flags, transportation, and educational materials.

The initiative arrives at a time of heightened national attention to the United States’ 250th anniversary, scheduled for July 4, 2026. The semiquincentennial, also called America250, is being marked by a series of federal and local celebrations that include commemorative coinage, a “Great American State Fair” at the National Mall, and a Times Square ball drop. The Vacaville effort is part of the broader pattern of community‑level projects that aim to honor the nation’s founding principles.

Residents who would like to support the initiative, request assistance with flag replacement or learn more about proper flag retirement are encouraged to call 707‑447‑6354 or visit www.vacavets.org. The VVSOs have stated that they will continue to work with city officials and local law‑enforcement agencies to ensure that all flags are displayed in compliance with the U.S. Flag Code.

The program is expected to replace hundreds of flags across the city, though the VVSOs have not yet released a total count. They have emphasized that the focus is on dignity and respect for the flag as a national symbol rather than on the number of flags replaced.

As the 250th anniversary approaches, the Vacaville veterans’ initiative exemplifies how local organizations can contribute to national celebrations while fostering community pride and civic responsibility. The VVSOs plan to maintain the flag replacement effort through the summer and into early July, coordinating with residents to schedule deliveries and provide ongoing education on flag etiquette.

The initiative remains open to new volunteers and donors, and the VVSOs will provide updates on the program’s progress through their website and local media outlets.
