Glenora Wine Cellars Launches Limited-Edition America 250 Collection for U.S. 250th Anniversary
The release is a carefully timed tribute, according to Glenora’s winemaker, Edward Miller. “We wanted the launch to coincide with the country’s milestone and the enthusiasm in our community,” Miller said. The trio has already found a quick home: several bottles sold out before the first weekend of July, prompting the winery to pour additional stock to keep the celebration flowing.
Glenora’s roots run deep in New York’s wine history. The 1976 New York Farm Winery Act, signed by Governor Hugh Carey, opened the door for grape growers to establish wineries and sell directly to consumers. An amendment in 1978 allowed any New York‑grown grapes to be used in farm‑winery products. Glenora opened its first cellar in 1977, becoming the pioneer on Seneca Lake and a cornerstone of the Finger Lakes wine narrative.
Each bottle in the America 250 line showcases grape varieties that define the Finger Lakes region. Revolution Red is a bold red blend that highlights the area’s capacity for producing robust, flavorful reds. Spark of Liberty Riesling taps into the lake‑effect climate that makes Seneca a haven for Riesling grapes, delivering a crisp, expressive white. Freedom Blue, a sparkling wine, reflects the region’s growing interest in native and hybrid varieties that offer fresh, lively character.
Miller explained that the collection was designed to mirror the diversity of the region’s viticulture. “We feature both heritage varieties that are well known in the Finger Lakes and emerging ones developed in partnership with Cornell University,” he said. “The collection is a great representation of the nation, several varieties and tastes coming together to make something special.”
Beyond the wines themselves, Glenora’s ownership structure adds another layer of intrigue. The cellar is owned by FLX Family Winery, LLC, a sister company to Lilly Broadcasting, LLC—the parent of WENY‑TV. This connection places the winery within a broader media and entertainment network, linking the craft of winemaking with the reach of regional broadcasting.
The release arrives at a time when the Finger Lakes are celebrating their own milestones. With more than 140 wineries and a significant share of New York’s grape production, the region stands as the state’s largest and most established wine‑producing area. Glenora’s limited‑edition bottles are already available at its tasting room and select retailers, and while the winery has not set a definitive end date for the series, it has indicated that production will continue as long as demand remains high.
The America 250 collection fits into a broader trend of Finger Lakes wineries commemorating national events with special releases. By aligning the launch with the U.S. 250th anniversary, Glenora Wine Cellars positions itself as a key player in the region’s cultural and economic landscape, offering consumers a way to toast the nation’s history while supporting a local cellar that has been part of the Finger Lakes story for nearly five decades.
The collection also underscores the enduring relevance of the New York Farm Winery Act, which has enabled small growers and wineries to thrive in the state’s wine industry. The act’s legacy is evident in Glenora’s success and that of its peers, all of whom have built reputations for quality and innovation. As the nation approaches its quarter‑century milestone, the America 250 collection stands as a timely tribute, a showcase of Finger Lakes grape varieties, and a reflection of the region’s ongoing growth and resilience.
