While the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season looks subdued, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has flagged two new potential troublemakers.

The agency’s latest tropical outlook now includes a system a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde archipelago and another deep in the eastern Atlantic off the African coast. Both waves are being watched closely as the season unfolds.

Tropical Disturbance 1 sits just west of the Cabo Verde Islands. The NHC notes that the disturbance could mature during the early to middle part of next week as it drifts westward across the central tropical Atlantic. The agency assigns a 0 % chance of development over the next 48 hours and a 20 % chance over the next seven days.

Tropical Disturbance 2 lies farther east, far from the African shoreline. With a 40 % probability of development over the next seven days, forecasters expect the wave to become a tropical depression during the second half of the week as it crosses the basin. The disturbance is projected to depart the African coast on Tuesday.

Both systems face a mix of environmental factors that could either inhibit or aid their growth. Saharan dust, upper‑level wind shear, and sea‑surface temperatures are identified as key variables that will determine whether either disturbance can organize into a tropical cyclone.

NOAA’s season outlook, issued earlier this year, projects a below‑average year for the Atlantic. The agency estimates 7 to 13 named storms, 2 to 6 hurricanes, and up to two major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). The range includes the two tropical storms that formed earlier in the summer—Arthur and Bertha—both of which developed in the Gulf of Mexico.

A strong El Niño is expected to persist through the fall, creating atmospheric conditions that suppress tropical development in the Atlantic. During an El Niño event, the subtropical jet stream strengthens and extends into the Caribbean and Atlantic, increasing wind shear that hampers storm formation.

The NHC’s designation of the two disturbances reflects the agency’s ongoing assessment of potential threats to the Atlantic basin. While the probability of development remains low for Disturbance 1, Disturbance 2 has a higher likelihood of becoming the next tropical system. Forecasters will continue to monitor the waves as they move across the ocean.

In the coming days, the NHC will issue updates on the status of the disturbances and any changes in their development probabilities. NOAA’s season outlook remains unchanged, emphasizing the role of the El Niño in limiting the number and intensity of storms.
