Iceland and Spain Experience First Total Solar Eclipse in 27 Years - Crowds, Wildfire Warnings, and Scientific Studies
In Iceland, the moon’s shadow arrived on the westernmost coast at about 5:44 p.m. (17:44 GMT), plunging the area into darkness for a maximum of 2 minutes 13 seconds. Most Icelandic cities experienced shorter periods of totality, with the darkness briefly interrupted as the shadow moved eastward. A Reuters witness, watching live from Reykjavik, said, “I was watching live from Reykjavik and, despite the overcast sky, a cheer went up from the crowd gathered in front of Hallgrimskirkja church when everything went black above them.”
Spanish officials anticipated up to six million visitors in rural zones within the eclipse’s path, which stretched from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean and included the Balearic Islands. Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska announced that 25,000 police officers would be deployed and that nearly 100 planes and helicopters would be on standby. He urged the public to follow observation points set up by authorities and to observe restrictions around some parks, adding, “Let’s not forget that the wildfire risk is very high, it’s extreme due to high temperatures.”
The eclipse coincided with a heatwave that had heightened the risk of wildfires across the region. Spanish finance officials warned that the heatwave could trigger fires in the countryside, prompting the government to launch a public‑safety campaign aimed at preventing accidental ignition. The heatwave also led the Spanish tourism board to advise visitors to plan early and to avoid congested areas.
Iceland, which had not seen a total solar eclipse since 1954, expected up to 80,000 visitors. Protective glasses were sold out for days, and authorities warned of heavy traffic and urged early arrival. A DJ set by singer Björk was scheduled for an eclipse‑themed event south of Reykjavik, but the event was largely a crowd of tourists and local observers.
NASA plans to fly a high‑altitude WB‑57 aircraft from Iceland to follow the moon’s shadow. NASA‑funded teams will launch balloons to study how the sudden darkness and cooling affect the lower atmosphere. The scientific community is also interested in the eclipse’s impact on wildlife, as some animals become quiet when the sun is obscured.
The eclipse drew “eclipse chasers” from around the world. Gordon Telepun, a retired plastic surgeon and amateur astronomer from the U.S., said he would watch from the island of Mallorca because Spain offered the best conditions for eclipse chasers. In Spain, people travelled from as far as Italy and Portugal to view the event.
The Iberian Peninsula last saw a total solar eclipse in 1912. The next one will occur on Aug. 2 2027, followed by an annular eclipse in Jan. 2028, completing the so‑called “Iberian Eclipse Trio.” The event also marked the first total solar eclipse visible in continental Spain since Aug. 30 1905 and the first in continental Europe since Mar. 29 2006.
The eclipse’s path of totality covered northern Spain from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean, including cities such as A Coruña, Valencia, Zaragoza, Palma, and Bilbao. Madrid and Barcelona lay just outside the path. The eclipse’s magnitude was 1.0386, and the greatest duration of totality—2 minutes 18 seconds—occurred 45 km off the western coast of Iceland.
The event underscored the growing interest in solar eclipses as both a tourist attraction and a scientific opportunity. While authorities managed crowds and wildfire risks, scientists seized the chance to observe atmospheric changes and animal behavior during a brief period of total darkness.
The eclipse will be followed by sunset in Spain, making the event particularly alluring for observers. As the world watched the moon’s shadow pass over Europe, the event highlighted the intersection of natural wonder, public safety, and scientific inquiry.
