Purdue-Led Expedition to Nikumaroro Aims to Resolve Amelia Earhart Mystery
The expedition, which follows a year‑long delay caused by weather and the need for clearance from the government of Kiribati, will focus on the so‑called Taraia object. The object was first identified in satellite imagery in 2015 and has been visible in subsequent images. It appears as a long, reflective shape in the lagoon on the island’s north side, near the Taraia Peninsula.
Ear Harts disappearance on July 2, 1937, remains one of the most enduring aviation mysteries. The aircraft, a Lockheed Electra 10E, was en route from Lae, Papua New Guinea, to Howland Island when it vanished. The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca, stationed at Howland, received a series of voice messages from Ear Harts warning of low fuel, but no two‑way communication was possible because the pilot and navigator did not know Morse code.
After a two‑week search that yielded no trace of the plane or its occupants, Ear Harts and Noonan were declared legally dead on January 5, 1939. Since then, a variety of expeditions have searched the Pacific, including a 2024 deep‑sea search near Howland Island that mistakenly identified a rock formation as wreckage.
The Nikumaroro hypothesis has gained traction in recent years. Proponents point to several lines of evidence: satellite images showing the Taraia object, radio bearings that converge on the island, bone fragments recovered from the island that match the proportions of a Euro‑American woman, and artifacts such as a woman’s shoe, a freckle cream jar, and a medicine vial that date to the 1930s.
Lead archaeologist Richard Pettigrew, 78, said the team will use a hydraulic dredge to carefully remove sediment layers around the lagoon’s edge. The goal is to determine whether the object is the Electra or another structure. Pettigrew emphasized that the expedition is a hypothesis test: “We won’t know until we go down there and identify it.”
The 16‑person crew will spend several days on Nikumaroro before moving to the lagoon. If the team locates the aircraft, a follow‑up mission is planned for the next year to conduct a full‑scale excavation and, potentially, to recover parts of the wreckage for transport to the United States.
Purdue’s senior vice president, Steve Schultz, said the university is negotiating with Kiribati for custody of any recovered wreckage. Ear Harts had served as a visiting adviser at Purdue and had expressed a wish that the aircraft be returned to the university for scientific study. Schultz added that Purdue would share the benefits of any exhibit with Kiribati in perpetuity.
The expedition is the most comprehensive effort to date, combining satellite analysis, underwater archaeology, and collaboration with the Kiribati government. While some experts remain skeptical—citing the lack of definitive evidence linking the Taraia object to the Electra—the team hopes to either confirm the plane’s location or rule out the island as a site.
If the search yields no results, the expedition will still contribute valuable data about the lagoon’s geology and the island’s history. The team plans to publish a detailed report on the sediment layers, artifact distribution, and any findings that could inform future research.
