Arizona State University’s move up to 15th place among U.S. public universities in the 2027 QS Rankings is a quiet yet clear indicator of the school’s growing influence on both the national and global stage.

On June 19, the QS World University Rankings released its annual list, noting that the Tempe‑based institution now sits 15th among public schools in the United States and 35th overall. The jump from 36th the previous year is modest, but it places ASU ahead of a string of well‑known peers—including the University of California, Santa Barbara, Ohio State University, and the University of Maryland—cementing its status in the upper echelon of public universities.

QS evaluates universities on a blend of academic reputation, employer reputation, research activity, international collaboration, and other indicators. By improving its score in these areas, ASU has edged into a higher tier, while its global position has also risen to 172nd, up from 173 in 2026. These movements reflect a sustained effort to strengthen research output, broaden international partnerships, and boost graduate employability.

The university’s performance in subject rankings adds depth to the overall picture. ASU earned a top‑ten spot for international research (9th) and a top‑20 position for sustainability (19th). Its academic reputation ranked 34th and employer reputation 35th among U.S. universities, underscoring a balanced emphasis on scholarly achievement and the real‑world impact of its graduates.

A separate voice of authority comes from the U.S. News & World Report, which released its own set of rankings on June 16. In that list, ASU appears 33rd among public schools and 57th overall, with a global rank of 179th. The report highlighted the university’s strengths in eight subject areas, placing it in the top 20 for environmental engineering (4), green and sustainable science and technology (5), education and educational research (7), chemical engineering (10), water resources (10), civil engineering (17), ecology (20), and environment/ecology (20). These rankings showcase the breadth of ASU’s expertise and its alignment with high‑impact research themes.

“We are thrilled that these rankings confirm the impact of our work,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Nancy Gonzales. “The recognition reflects our commitment to creating meaningful impact through teaching, learning and research discovery, and to solving the world’s most pressing challenges through the students we graduate and the knowledge and innovations produced by our scholars.”

ASU’s climb is especially meaningful for a public research university that serves more than 160,000 students, including 81,000 online learners. The improved positions may influence prospective students’ choices, attract high‑caliber faculty, and open new funding opportunities. The university’s strong performance in sustainability and environmental engineering aligns with its broader research agenda, which includes the Applied Materials EPIC Center for semiconductor research.

Looking forward, ASU plans to sustain momentum by expanding international partnerships and enhancing graduate employability programs. No immediate changes to ranking methodology or institutional strategy have been announced, but leadership is already outlining initiatives that will build on the current gains.

The rankings underscore ASU’s status as a leading public university in the United States and a competitive player on the global stage. With continued growth expected in the coming years, the university’s trajectory signals a sustained commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and innovation.
