HBO and Warner Bros. are pushing the Game of Thrones universe further into the future, unveiling a slate of new shows, a feature film, and a trio of animated adventures.

The most concrete addition is the fourth season of House of the Dragon, the prequel that chronicles the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. HBO confirmed that season three, which aired in 2026, is the penultimate installment and that a final season will conclude the story. With the network’s two‑year cadence, the fourth season is slated for summer 2028.

A second live‑action prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, debuted on HBO on January 18, 2026. The series adapts George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novella The Hedge Knight. HBO renewed the show for a second season in November 2025, and the new season will adapt the novella The Sworn Sword. Production is underway and the series is slated for a 2027 premiere.

In addition to television, Warner Bros. announced a feature film titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest at CinemaCon in 2026. The film will focus on the 300‑year‑old conquest of Westeros by Aegon the Conqueror. Beau Willimon, who wrote House of Cards, is the screenwriter. No official release date has been set, but the production schedule suggests a theatrical debut no earlier than 2028.

The franchise is also exploring animation. Two projects are in early development. The Golden Empire is an adult animated series that will focus on the eastern Essos region of Yi Ti, a culture loosely based on Imperial China. The project has received concept art that Martin has praised, but it has not yet been green‑lit. The Sea Snake will center on Corlys Velaryon, the legendary Sea Snake, and will follow his voyages across Essos. Bryan Heller, co‑creator of HBO’s Rome, is attached to the project. Both series are still in the developmental stage and no production timelines have been announced.

A third animated prequel, 10,000 Ships, will tell the story of Princess Nymeria of the Rhoyne and her fleet that fled Essos. Amanda Segel is set to write the series, but the project’s status is uncertain. Martin has indicated that only two animated spinoffs will move forward, so either The Golden Empire or 10,000 Ships may be dropped.

Not all announced projects have survived to production. In April 2024, HBO shelved a Game of Thrones series focused on Kit Harington’s Jon Snow after the parties could not agree on a narrative direction. A pilot for Bloodmoon, a series set 8,000 years before the original show, was filmed in 2018 but was removed from HBO’s lineup because the network feared repeating the shortcomings of the final season of Game of Thrones. A planned series set in the Flea Bottom slum of King’s Landing was also cancelled, with no details released.

Overall, the Game of Thrones franchise is in a period of active expansion, with confirmed live‑action seasons, a forthcoming film, and several animated projects in varying stages of development. HBO and Warner Bros. are maintaining the brand’s presence while exploring new storytelling formats and earlier periods of the fictional world. Fans can expect the final season of House of the Dragon in 2028, the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2027, and the release of Aegon’s Conquest sometime after 2028. The status of the animated series remains uncertain, and the cancelled projects serve as a reminder of the challenges of expanding a beloved franchise.
